week 2 update

Today wraps up week 2 of the One Room Challenge and marks the start of the projects I’ve been waiting months to get started on! Everyone has been doing absolutely uh-mazing-things in the Challenge already, and it’s been so cool getting to watch other people progress and learn and tackle new, exciting projects. You can see what the other designer’s are up to right over here, but be warned—you might just find yourself wanting to scroll through every awesome room from hours. I know this from experience.

This past week I tackled most of the smaller items on my to-do list so that now I can focus just on the big stuff. Before, I really get into my progress though, I do have some other exciting news! I decided to make some changes to my original design plan because…we’re getting a new bed!

We’ve been sleeping on an old, uncomfortable IKEA mattress for years and figured, why not get a new one now? We plan to redo almost the entire room anyway, so we might as well go ahead and do the whole damn thing. We did a sleep test at Living Spaces and completely fell in love with the Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt mattress. It has multiple cooling layers which is perfect for me who loathes sleeping next to a sweaty giant. We both liked the Medium Hybrid feel, which has a foam and spring coil combo, and had a total Goldilocks moment in the store. It wasn’t too plush or too firm, it was just right! As like with most decisions I make, I had to have it right then and there. Sooo we bought it. Luckily we were able to score a major deal on it, so we splurged on the split king size. The split king will give us a lot more space than we have now which is perfect for Ira who loathes my cold feet rubbing on him all night. We’ll also be getting a split adjustable base so that we’re able to adjust our sides of the bed individually.

Of course, with the new bed will have to come a new bed frame. After spending a $#!+ ton on the mattress and base—good mattresses are not cheap y’all, even with a discount—we really didn’t want to shell out another couple hundred bucks for a bed frame. Y’all know what that means. Another DIY project!!! (Do anything for content, amiright?) But really, I’m actually pretty excited for this because while I’ve made quite a few headboards, I’ve never attempted anything as major as a bed frame before. The frame will mainly just be for aesthetic purposes though, to hide the adjustable base, so I’m not too worried about it. How hard can it be to build a box right?! (I’ll probably be eating those words later. I know it.)

Just two days after buying our new bed, we were able to sell our old bed frame, mattress, and boxspring. Facebook Marketplace coming in clutch, once again. However, it looks like we’ll be kicking it on the pullout couch for the next 2-4 weeks until our new stuff comes in. Fingers crossed it makes it here in time for the reveal!

In other news, back to the progress updates. All of my stuff has been ordered, shipped, delivered, and is now waiting in various places of my home as a constant reminder to get a move on! This week I install the cord hiding strips for my mounted TV and assembled the bookcases that I’ll be using as the base of my wardrobe on the TV wall (you can look at the renderings here if you need a little reminder.) I also found some awesome nesting jewelry trays on sale at At Home for only $6 each in store! I bought two different sets in the clearance section of At Home, but can only find one of them online, so check your local store! I also originally found a very similar set on Amazon for less than $10, but it was too big for the depth of my bookcases.

The trays started off in various shades of blue and yellow, and were a bit worn looking from living in At Home’s clearance section. Nothing a little spray paint couldn’t fix! I wiped them down and then used plastic-bonding spray paint to give them a quick makeover, and voila!

I also went ahead and added the drawer pulls to my IKEA Vikhammer nightstands. This only took about 30 minutes since I already had the nightstands assembled and was pretty straightforward. I put a piece of painter’s tape on the front of the drawer to help keep the faux wood from chipping as a drilled—a little tip I learned from Jennifer over at Making Pretty Spaces. Using a tape measure, I found the absolute center of the drawer front (vertically and horizontally) and marked it on the tape.

Afterwards, I lined up my template with the center mark and selected where I wanted the drawer pulls to go. Be sure that the holes you choose on the template match up with the holes on your drawer pulls. I chose to place the handle a little closer to the top of the drawer than center is, but where you place it is up to you! Once you have everything lined up, mark and drill your holes front the front side of the drawer. The particle board will chip a little as the drill bit exits the wood, so we want that part to be on the inside of the drawer. Afterwards, just remove the tape and screw in your drawer pull. Easy enough, right?

I thiiink that’s it for this weeks updates. For those of you keeping track at home, my ORC To Do List now looks a little something like this:

  • Shop for materials
  • Paint walls black
  • Add accent to black walls?
  • Hang pendant lights
  • Assemble bookcases
  • Build doors for bookcases
  • Add cord management
  • Storage solutions for inside cabinets
  • Add pulls to nightstands
  • Build laundry cabinet
  • Lay rug
  • Hang art/frames/gallery wall?
  • Hang mirror
  • Add plants & style
  • Swap bedding
  • Install new bed
  • Build bedframe

I’m off to start painting…and still have not decided what type of accent I want to do, in case you were wondering. I guess we’ll see where my brush strokes take me. Catch ya back here next week!
